Police Costume

After we presented our title sequence to our class, there was questions over the female victim's occupation as they did not know why she had a picture of our male antagonist.

Our narrative explains the female victim is the antagonist's former police partner. Although the audience is not supposed to know our antagonist is a police officer, they are supposed to know of the female's occupation. To clarify this, we added in shots of her in a police uniform.

Filming Locations

We filmed in Victoria Embankment Gardens as part of our locations around London. We were to film around the Embankment, Trafalgar Square- to which we showed in the background to the bus scenes- Charing Cross bridge, the walkway and the station. 

These scenes presented Hannah's character to be walking around London in her everyday life as the villain follows her unbeknownst to her. 

For the wall scenes in our sequence, we used a practise room in music. 

This is because we needed a wall to stick the newspapers and further 'evidence' up. The room was small enough for us to film the shots needed and we were able to quickly film the footage we wanted. 

Day Two: Filming

This day was dedicated to the wall scenes of our sequence.

We began on schedule as we spent an hour setting up the scene- we cut various articles in newspapers and added our own articles about acid attacks which was a mixture of our own mock ups and articles we found online. We used a practise room located in music at school to shoot these parts. Hannah took charge in filming as I handled the props and lighting. We managed to remain on schedule  throughout filming as we continued to film our male character as the killer putting up images of Hannah's character on the wall. 

Hannah and I managed to finish everything we needed to film for our sequence on schedule and are now ready to edit. 

Day One: Filming

On our first day of filming we wanted to film the POV shots of the killer following his latest victim around as she goes about in her everyday life. We filmed with a GoPro attached on our male actor's head to achieve the POV shot. We met on schedule yet the train delay caused us to lose some time. The filming on the Embankment went very well- Hannah and I managed to achieve what was planned in our storyboard.  We filmed Hannah's character walking about in the morning oblivious to the killer following her.

 We then continued to film in Victoria Embankment Gardens where Hannah's character was shown to be looking through her police files as the killer watches on. Hannah and I then move on to shooting the scenes on the bus of the killer sitting closely behind her as she looks of a picture of him from her police files. After the bus scene we made our way to the bridge by Charing Cross Station to film our last scene off the day. Hannah's character walls across the bridge and accidentally drops the image of the killer -which he picks up. We faced an issue with this as various pedestrians interrupted filming as  they notified Hannah of the paper falling. Hannah and I finished filming with the female character going to her last stop on the train- where the female character will ultimately die.

Costumes

For the costume of Hannah's character, we wanted to convey an idea that the character is professional therefore we chose a white shirt, a black pencil skirt and a pair of black heels. In order for our female character to be noticeable to the audience and our villain we chose a bright red coat; which also connotes danger.



Our villain's face is not shown in the sequence only his arms and hands. We chose for the villain to wear a simple grey jumper which blends in with the crowd and does not draw any attention to them. In addition, to hide all identification of our villain, Hannah and I decided for Ryan- our male actor-  to wear black gloves. This further adds to the mystery of the killer's identity and relates to our crime mystery genre.

Music Choices

For the music for our title sequence, Hannah and I wanted to choose a soundtrack that was dramatic and intense to fit our mystery crime thriller. We wanted the audience to feel excited and frightened as they watched. The following are the three potential choices for our sequence chosen from incompetech:

Ultimately we chose to use The House of Leaves after adding each soundtrack in our sequence during the editing process and came to a conclusion that the music chosen best suited our work. The House of Leaves creates a suspense for the audience as the instrumental is eerie and intense- which is the desired atmosphere we wanted to create in our sequence.  In addition, we chose this piece as we liked the flow of the music as it gradually builds to a crescendo creating a build up of tension. Hannah and I believed this effect worked well with the visuals as our sequence gradually builds up and concludes with a dramatic climax.

Furthermore, towards the end we decided to add in the sound effects of footsteps and a loud metal drum noise to further intensify the build up to our sequence. We think this choice is effective as it creates excitement for our audience.

Narrative Plan: Storyboard

Hannah and I planned our title sequence frame by frame on a storyboard. We planned what shots we are to use. Our sequence shows our attacker hanging photos of his latest victim on his wall with shots cutting back to him following her. We wanted to continuously cut back and forth with focus on the killer and the victim to create curiosity and suspense amongst the audience. In addition, there will be no dialogue throughout only a soundtrack which still needs to be decided. 

 The sequence ends with the victim going into a station. In addition, we are to use a continuous soundtrack throughout our sequence.

Pitch: Final Presentation

This is our final pitch where Hannah and I presented to our audience of how the title sequences we chose inspired us and we also addressed the changes we made after the feedback we were given in our first pitch.  

The changes we addressed was the budget change to which we increased and we also changed the male actor for our sequence from Jason O'Mara to a more well known actor- Danny Dyer. Furthermore, we chose Danny Dyer as he has worked with our director, Nick Love many times before so it made more sense to cast him as the lead. 

Pitch: Feedback

After giving our pitch to the class, Hannah and I received feedback of what went well, what needed developing and what was wrong.  From this, we have improved our pitch and added information we missed out. We changed the actor of our main lead from Jason O'Mara to Danny Dyer. Our feedback sheets questioned our budget and suggested we raise it to suit the director and genre. In our pitch, we included what we expect our title sequence to look like and added Todorov's theory to explain our narrative.

Narrative: Title Sequence

Title: Incursion

Hannah and I are to create an opening sequence for a mystery crime film. We have been heavily influenced by these films:

• The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (David Fincher, US, 2011)
• Zodiac (David Fincher, US, 2007)
• The Usual Suspects (Bryan Singer, US, 1995) 
• The Sweeney (Nick Love, UK, 2012)

Genre: Mystery Crime

Todorov Narrative

Equilibrium:

A woman's body is found on a train track, her face is heavily disfigured following an  acid attack. It is revealed the victim was a former police officer who was recently promoted as Sergeant of the British police force. Her previous partner on the police force, Robert Johnson, takes her place as Sargent and is also assigned an associate Sergeant Catherine Moore. Robert immediately shows a dislike for Catherine. After a shift, he is seen following a business woman  to a spa where she uses the sauna facilities. Robert replaces the water with liquid acid just before she enters and locks her in, leaving her in a chamber of vapourised acid, ultimately killing her.

Disequilibrium:

Next day, the spa is shown as a crime scene and Johnson and Moore are shown to be investigating the case. Moore finds Johnson acting dismissively towards her, raising her suspicions against him.  She later realises a piece of evidence, survellience tape,  is missing. Robert follows another woman to a hairdressers and sneaks in, unnoticed. He sneaks at the back and tampers with the woman's hairdye before swiftly leaving the shop.

Recognition of disruption:

Robert is at the flat, being informed on the recent attack as he watches it on the news and finds out about her survival. His flat reveals a detailed shrine of his victims, pictures and newspaper clippings of his work covers the wall.  Just as he's about to leave, Catherine walks in as he hides and watches her discover his wall. Although at first Catherine assumes the wall to be his investigation, she later finds his collection of surveillance tapes of the acid attacks. Catherine figures he is the murderer and rushes off the the police station leaving Robert to plan her death.

Attempt to Repair:

Seemingly calm, Robert follows Catherine in her daily activities, waiting for a moment to commit his crime. He continues to follow her  and documents her movements to which he adds it to his wall progressively. Robert then follows Catherine to an underground train station and shouts for her causing Catherine to run and call for back up.


 

New Equilibrium: 

 In an underground station, a dozen police officers, lead by Catherine, surround Robert thus making him back up towards a train track and pours the acid meant for Catherine on the floor creating a barrier between him and the police. Due to his refusal to be arrested by a woman, Robert ultimately jumps into the tracks- his death is left ambiguous.
